As my partner and I walked towards The Backlot in the Pickle District of West Perth, we were looking forward to watching the preview of Spit starring none other than David Wenham.

David Wenham is a household name in Australian cinema – if you’ve not seen him in any shows or don’t know who he is, then you’ve been probably been living under a rock!

Spit is an Aussie comedy with David Wenham (playing “Spit” – John Spitieri), who is on the run for a crime that he committed a few decades ago, trying to get back into Australia on a false passport. We follow his adventures through the airport, the detention centre and then on the run in Queensland helped by Jihad, his newly made best buddy from detention who has been successful in seeking asylum in Australia.

Director Jonathan Teplitzky and Writer Chris Nyst bring back to life John Spitieri from their 2003 cult classic Gettin’ Square with the lovable Johnny Francis “Spit” Spitieri returning to the screen some 20 years later.

Nostalgia will hit the screen for many movie goers as all the old favourite actors from Aussie shows make their appearance – David Roberts, David Field, and Gary Sweet (as Charles “Chicka” Martin).

It’s a side-splittingly funny movie and Wenham’s facial expressions and backpedalling are priceless as he gets himself into all sorts of adventures.

If you are looking for a light hearted and fun Australia comedy – then Spit is the movie that you will enjoy.

Its quintessential Australian flavour as a film is akin to vegemite on toast as a uniquely Aussie experience.

And if you are visiting Australia from another country or are a recent migrant, then this will be an eye opener of a movie (culturally and language wise) – as you are introduced to some bonza fair dinkum Aussie lingo.

My partner and I left The Pickle District sharing a few good laughs as we discussed how funny the movie was and the authenticity of David Wenham as a reformed dirt bag.

Spit opens at Luna on 6 March.

You can also catch some special advance screenings on Friday 28 February, Saturday 1 March and Sunday 2 March at Luna Leederville.
