On a warm sunny day in Perth we headed up to the beaches along the West Coast Highway and West Coast Drive. The beaches are always buzzing with action day or night – whether it be people walking along the coastal path, swimming, surfing or just hanging out at one of the local eateries.
Starting with Trigg Beach, the surfies are dotted on the water, bobbing up and down, sitting on their boards – waiting to catch the perfect wave.
The sidewalks along Trigg Beach are busy with people dining at Island Market Trigg with beautiful views overlooking the ocean, or at Canteen Trigg for a casual meal alfresco – think poke trays, burgers, a selection of seafood dishes and the quintessential (classic) fish and chips.
If you are planning a picnic with family and friends, Clarko Reserve nearby to Trigg has plenty of nice grassy areas and BBQ facilities, shaded areas and picnic tables – space enough for everyone.
Heading up the coast past Clarko Reserve, the Trigg Dog Beach between Kathleen and Bennion Streets is an off leash area designated for our special furry friends. It is a relatively small beach bounded by rocks on both sides. If you are looking for a larger dog beach with a long stretch where the dogs can pelt up and down, head south to Peasholm Beach between Floreat Beach and Scarborough Beach.
For snorkelling fans and swimmers, Mettams Pool is a lovely area to check out the wonders of underwater sea life. Mornings are the best time for snorkelling, when the water is calmer and before it gets too hot. Metttams Pool also has shower facilities to rinse off once you’ve had your dip or snorkel.
For those with special mobility needs, Mettams Pool has a special purpose built ramp, which leads directly to the water with a continuous handrail along the path for ease of access.
Following the coastal path alongside West Coast Drive takes you up to North Beach. Just past North Beach Road, you’ll find a cluster of shops at the North Beach Shopping Centre. Farmer Jacks supermarket for groceries and some eateries, including Tom’s Italian which is perched right at the top level of the building with sweeping views over the ocean.
For pub goers, there is Froth for a beer and pizza and Spinifex North Beach to check out.
The North Beach Jetty closer towards the Watermans Bay section of the coast, is a good vantage point to take in the sea breeze and watch spectacular sunsets.
The Watermans Bay Playground is a lovely area for the kids to burn up some energy - it is surrounded by some nice grassy areas for picnics and relaxation.
All up, there is something for everyone along our beautiful West Coast Highway and West Coast Drive. Take the time to explore the coast and don’t forget to bring along your sunscreen, trusty Tesalate beach towel and swim gear.
