    Perth Walkabout December Monthly Wrap

    Details

The Perth Walkabout Monthly Wrap is published at the start of each month to provide a snapshot of articles that hit the headlines in the last 4 weeks.

Here is Perth Walkabout's Monthly Wrap for the month of December:

Rooftop Movies in Perth – Classics, Pink Flamingos and an Evening Under the Stars

Summer is the perfect time to hit the outdoor movie circuit in Perth. The weather is balmy, and getting outdoors for a night of entertainment is a perfect way to spend an evening with family and friends. Well, Perthites are in luck as organisers of Artrage (including the beloved Fringe World Festival) have set up Rooftop Movies in the heart of Northbridge, showing your favourite flicks out in the open air until the end of April.

So where are these pop up movies in Perth?

Bayswater – Bird Watching, Sunsets and BBQs

Regardless of where you live in Perth, you’ll be sure to find some nice recreational spots to enjoy nearby. The suburb of Bayswater, approximately 8 kms north east from the Perth CBD, has many recreational spots and parks catering for those who like the great outdoors. Within this suburb, you’ll find many reserves including the Eric Singleton Bird Park, the Bayswater Riverside Gardens, and the Baigup Wetlands.

Here is a handy summary of some of the best Bayswater recreational parks to check out:

Busselton Jetty – The Longest Jetty in the Southern Hemisphere

Earlier this year, the famous Busselton Jetty overlooking Geographe Bay reopened after a major overhaul that cost $27 million dollars. Its claim to fame is for holding the record for the longest wooden (or timber-piled) jetty in the Southern Hemisphere at 1.9 kilometres. Post renovation, it is now in a much stronger position to maintain its special record.

At the jetty entrance, you will find the boat shed visitors centre – that’s if you don’t get distracted and find yourself at a few hundred metres away indulging at Simmo’s the local ice cream outlet!

Mindarie Marina – Waterfront Views, A Micro Brewery and Restaurants Galore

Head on up the Mitchell Freeway. Keep going. Keep going. And you’ll soon find yourself heading into the sunny suburb of Mindarie.

This popular Northern suburb comes packed with great beaches, schools, local shops and some great fishing spots.   Not to mention an excellent selection of local and award winning restaurants.
For many, the heart of Mindarie is its picturesque marina and this is where most visitors to Mindarie will spend their time.

Feast of International Movies at the 2013 Perth Film Festival

The Perth film festival is back and locals are enjoying a smorgasbord of films as part of the Perth International Arts Festival 2013.

Shown at two locations in Perth – the Somerville Theatre at UWA and Joondalup Pines at Edith Cowan University, the festival films are a popular annual event that Perthites look forward to each year.

This year, the festival film season kicked off on the 25 November 2012 and will run till the 14 April 2013.

Life’s Good at the Woodvale Tavern

The Woodvale Tavern tags itself as “Your local British Pub in the heart of Woodvale.” Having never been to an actual pub in Britain (or anywhere in Britain for that matter, but it’s on my bucket list) I can’t tell a newcomer from the UK how it compares to home. But many British expats choose to make a new home in the Woodvale area, which is about a half hour drive north from the Perth CBD.

Friday Evenings at the Perth Twilight Hawkers Market

On a fine summer’s Friday night I set off with a friend to check out the Perth Twilight Hawkers Market. If you have a penchant for foodie events, the markets are a fun event showcasing food from cuisines around the world, cooked by locals. Now In its second year, the event is organised by the City of Perth and is being held in Forrest Chase. The Twilight Hawker Markets run from December through to April so get your butt on down there to enjoy some tasty food.

Stay tuned to Perth Walkabout to explore our beautiful city of Perth.
