If you’re a history and cultural buff who is planning a trip to Australia, you’ll probably be itching to add a good Australian book or two to your collection to whet your appetite. There are many to choose from, but which ones are worth carrying around in your luggage?
Well, assuming you are an independent traveller, you’ve probably got your trusty dog-eared Lonely Planet (aka travel Bible) or favourite equivalent on hand. Guidebooks can provide a good overview on a city, though depending on your specific interests, you may be looking for more than just a general guide to a place. This brings me to a guide book that you’ll want to consider for your travelling book collection.
“Great Australian Pubs” by Lee Mylne is an informative and highly entertaining Guide book on the Top 100 Pubs in Australia. Lee takes us on a whirlwind tour of the best pubs to stop for a drink, meal or bed for the night.

It is a brave and confident person who travels to a new country without at least one guide book tucked into their suitcase or backpack.
You know the ones I mean? Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Fodors, Frommers. The list is endless.
But what if you want to dig a little deeper and learn something about the country you are travelling to beyond the bare facts and currency exchange rate?
For travellers venturing to Australia for the first time, or even for those who plan on a more permanent move, it pays to do a bit of background reading to help you understand the culture of the people, their history and what makes them tick.
The following list of non-fiction Australian books (see Related Articles below for fiction) is a great starting point and just a small sample of what is available.

Are you planning to travel to Perth and want to whet your appetite with some background reading?
Books not only allow you to visit ever corner of the globe but they can give you an insight into a country and its people beyond the accepted stereotype.
When friends and family come to visit they often ask me to recommend some books that will give them some understanding of the Australian way of life, its past and its present.
The following list of fiction books is by no means a definitive one but rather a taste of what is out there, both modern and classic. Western Australian’s are proud of their literary stars and of books set in WA, and I for one am happy to shout about the following from the rooftops.
