what-to-do-in-perth-2-150

A morning run along the banks of the Swan River, basking in King's Park in January, or heading over to Fremantle for fish and chips along the harbour; these are just a few of my favourite Perth memories. I first came here a little more than two years ago and ever since, I've been desperate to book another Australian adventure. It's definitely on my must-visit list for a 2013 holiday - there always seems to be plenty going on no matter what the season.

If you don't fall in love with the waterfront sunsets and the incredible surf, there's always the gorgeous Swan Valley with its panoramic views, not to mention all the wine. I also found it pretty tough to name just a few of the things I love about this laid-back Australian city, so I've done one better and given you my top 10 picks for what to do in Perth.

Broome…laid back and balmy, a great escape during the winter time in Perth or anytime really. If you’re looking to quench your thirst, then make sure to visit the Matso’s Brewery for their range of ciders and beers. A visit to Broome wouldn’t be complete without tasting the range of brews  that this family owned company crafts.

At Perth Walkabout, we are always on the hunt for those special locally made products which are a real treat to the senses….whether to the taste buds, eyes, or palate, you name it. And when we do discover them, we are over the moon.

lancelin-150

Lancelin is a beautiful sea side town around one hour from Perth, and makes for an easy day trip north up the coast of Western Australia. Keep going up the coast and you may just find yourself in Exmouth or even Broome!

The trip to Lancelin is an easy drive along the Indian Ocean Drive. Take the Mitchell Freeway, pass through Joondalup, take the turn for Wanneroo Road, which leads to Lancelin Drive, and then head straight up the Indian Ocean Drive. You’ll pass by Yanchep, and the small seaside towns of Seabird and Ledge Point to get there.

cervantes-1-150

Cervantes is a beautiful, laid back town north of Perth, where the sun shines most days, and where the crystal blue water entices you to have a swim. It’s an easy 2 hours drive along the Indian Ocean Drive and makes for a perfect weekend getaway from Perth.

The Indian Ocean Drive was put in around September 2010, and cuts travelling time significantly from over 3 hours to under 2 hours. It’s straight up Mitchell Freeway, through the modern Joondalup township, then onto Wanneroo Rd, then Lancelin Drive, to take you onto the Indian Ocean Drive.

Along the drive to Cervantes, Yanchep, Seabird and Ledge Point all make good stop off points for a break, morning tea or a visit to a local attraction. Those who have an interest in astronomy will want to pay a visit to the Gravity Discovery Centre in Gingin.

Cervantes is a great base for sightseeing if you have the Pinnacles on your to do list.

Black Swan State Theatre Company Presents The Mother F**ker with the Hat

What the f*ck? It’s not our usual thing to spout profanities on Perth Walkabout, but the title of the Black Swan State Theatre Company’s first play for the season did rather catch my attention. To be shown at the Studio Underground, State Theatre Centre of WA, “The Mother F**ker with the Hat” promises a comedy of laughs set amongst New York’s Puerto Rican community.

Though it has been touted as a comedy, upon reading through the promo, the play also looks to have some intense drama, with the themes of drugs, love, and jealousy thrown into the mix.

Pinnacles – Amazing Landscape Shines Bright in the Desert Sun

pinnacles-150

The sun is shining bright and it’s a clear blue sky sort of day, which is not unusual for Perth. We are off to visit the Pinnacles in the Nambung National Park from our nearby base at Cervantes. The Pinnacles Desert is 10 kilometres from Cervantes heading south back towards the city off the Indian Ocean Drive.

It’s a top attraction that is on the must see list for many visitors to Western Australia which receives over 150,000 visitors each year. Given its closeness to Perth (a couple of hours drive), there’s really no excuse not to visit since the Pinnacles makes for a great day trip or a weekend overnighter if you would like to explore nearby areas as well.
