When a play has you watching a girl in a canary yellow bridesmaid dress and high heels potraying an elderly Scottish crime boss chasing the hero through the streets and parks of Edinburgh, and it all seems perfectly normal, then you know you are watching something out of the ordinary.

And yet Midsummer (a play with songs) showing at Black Swan State Theatre Company is far from being a wacky off the wall comedy.

We were alerted to this concert by a friend and grabbed the chance to go to the GALSWA 20th Anniversary Concert at the Fly By Night Club in Fremantle.

The theme for the concert was Harmony in Diversity. The choir sings beautifully with about 20 singers performing a varied repertoire, mostly a cappella including pop, show tunes and Motown. For a community choir, they take on a challenging repertoire and do it very, very well.

Concern over council amalgamations is one thing Š but seceding from Australia entirely, seems radical even for Freo!

Local arts company Strictly Hypothetical have joined forces with Fremantle Vision 2029  to create a Freo Festival event like no other.

Billed as "the thinking person's night out" this thought experiment will feature a panel of local luminaries including newly re-elected Mayor, Brad Pettit; eco-trail-blazer Sharni Graham and East Freo WAFL Coach Michelle Cowan.

Inspired by Geoffrey Robertson, and billed as "the thinking person's night out", Strictly Hypothetical is social commentary, meets live comedy.

Are we turning our cities into places that are easy to get to but not worth arriving at?  How can 'typical' cities provide their citizens with a quality of life that makes them want to stay?

Renowned US author, city planner and architectural designer Jeff Speck believes the answers to these questions come down to one key factor - walkability.

Speck, who will be in Perth next week to present a public lecture at the State Theatre Centre of WA on Wednesday, 16 October, has dedicated his career to what makes cities thrive.  He believes in building walkable urban places for economic, social, health and environmental benefits.

His US experience has great resonance in Australia, and particularly for Perth as the city undergoes its latest transformation.
